USMCA Formally Replaces NAFTA, TN Program Unchanged

Yesterday, July 1st, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) took effect, formally replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As previously reported, the USMCA was signed into law by President Trump earlier this year as a rewrite to NAFTA, establishing new rules affecting the dairy and agriculture industry, country of origin tariff rules on automobile manufacturing, intellectual property and digital trade, and labor laws in Mexico. The USMCA does not change or alter the TN program in any way, and preserves the original provisions from NAFTA relating to TN visa classification for workers from Canada and Mexico.
